Language Arts (Grades 1-8)

We use Houghton Mifflin Reading series in Grades 1-6.  Grades 7-8 use Prentice Hall Literature.  Reading instruction progresses over time as students move from “learning to read” to “reading to learn.”  Literature selections include a wide variety of genres, including poetry, drama, short stories, folk tales, novels, and nonfiction (biographies, essays, etc.).  Additionally, a Title I Grant pays for a reading teacher to work with struggling readers and support them in literacy.

English grammar is taught using Voyages in English and Exercises in English by Loyola Press.  Not only do students learn about parts of speech and sentence structure; they also apply what they learn to their own writing in order to create well-structured sentences, paragraphs, and essays.

For spelling, our students use Spelling Workout by Modern Curriculum Press.  Spelling instruction is especially helpful to our English language learners, and all students benefit from the study of vowel patterns, digraphs, diphthongs, plurals, prefixes and suffixes, contractions, possessives, compound words, and homonyms.

Our middle school students strengthen their vocabularies with Vocabulary Workshop by Sadlier-Oxford.

Grades K2-5 practice their handwriting using Zaner-Bloser Handwriting.  Books progress from introduction to, mastery of, and maintenance of first manuscript and then cursive.
