January 15, 2012

Dear Families,

Happy New Year!   I hope your family had a restful break from school, and that you were able to enjoy the special time together with extended family and friends.  We are off to a great start in 2012, and thankful for the opportunity to begin anew.  I love Oprah’s quote about the new year:  “Cheers to a new year and another chance to get it right.”  Beginnings are full of hope and good intentions, and the year ahead I’m sure will provide countless opportunities for us to try to get it right.  Thank you for all you do, and for partnering with us to try to make things right for your children.  Please read on:

Clubs: We are going to take a break from clubs for a few weeks.  Look for information about spring clubs in the coming weeks.

Report Cards:  Many thanks to everyone who has returned your child’s report card.  If you have not already done so, please return it signed immediately.

Half Day:  This Friday, January 6 is a half day.  Students will dismiss at 11:30 so that the teachers can have professional development.

National Geography Bee:  Congratulations to the following students in Grades 4-8 who qualify for our school geography bee:  Andrew Acluche, Fiorella Osorio, Cherry Le, Jorge Guardado, Andres Ramirez, Ciara Morris, Hadassah Cormier, Sebastian Merino, Tuyen Tran, Declan Corchado.  Our school bee will be held next Thursday, January 12 at 12:45 pm in Hubner Hall.  Parents are welcome to attend.  The winner will take a written exam to see whether he or she qualifies to go on to the next level of competition.  The National Geography Bee is sponsored by Google and National Geographic Magazine.

Winter Weather:  A few reminders:  unless it is pouring rain, we will not open the front doors until 7:30, so please do not come (or drop off your children) earlier than that.  All children need to dress for the weather, with a coat, a hat, gloves, and a scarf.  They go outside for recess, gym, and other occasions, and need to be prepared!  If your child does not have these items, please let Ms. Keeton know and she will try to see if she can find them for him/her.  If it snows and you think there is a possibility that we won’t have school, tune in to Channel 4 (WBZ), Channel 7, Channel 5 (WCVB) or Fox 25 and look for St. Rose Elementary.  I will call in as soon as I make a decision.  All decisions are made based on the likelihood that teachers and students can get to school safely.

GoodSearch:  Need to know more about something?  Instead of using Google, try using www.goodsearch.com.  You can put in St. Rose School (Chelsea, MA) as the charity you want to benefit each time you use this search engine.

Missions:  Today we received a visit from Ms. Maureen Heil, who coordinates the Holy Childhood Association for the Archdiocese of Boston.  The HCA is a way for kids to help kids around the world through missions.  We will be participating in the HCA as a school.  Occasionally information will come home about different countries that are helped by the missions.  You can read more about the HCA online at: www.hcakids.org.  There are some great resources!

Lunches:  Please see attached letter to order the school lunch for your child for the week of January 9-13. You need to send this form back in each week, even if you receive free lunch, or if you are choosing not to get lunch this week for our records.  Thank you.

Registration:  We hope to send home paperwork for re-registration in next week’s Thursday envelope.  During Catholic Schools Week, we will open registration to new families.  Please plan to re-register early to guarantee your child a spot!

St. Rose on Facebook:  St. Rose School is officially on Facebook!  Check it out at: http://www.facebook.com/pages/St-Rose-School/174719982596857.  Our plan is to use this page as a tool to keep you informed and share pictures and good news throughout the year.  Thanks to those of you who have already found the page and started interacting with it!

Communication via Email:  If you would like to receive the newsletter and other information via email, please go to www.strosechelsea.com/contact/emailsignup.html and enter your information.  We will gladly begin keeping you informed electronically! Please ask Ms. Keeton if you have any questions.

BrainPOP:  Don’t forget to use it at home! www.brainpop.com .  Our username is: strosechelsea and our password is: 580broadway.

Box Tops:  Don’t forget to save your Box Tops!  Please tear them off of products you buy and use at home.  They help our school to raise money!  Thank you!

Blessings,

Caitlin Keeton, Principal
